Geek Chic??
I have been a geek my entire life. I’ve done my best to keep that fact a secret from the world at large so I wouldn’t be ostracized by my peers. I would read manga and watch anime in the safety of my bedroom. I would wait until movies of a more geeky nature came out on VHS/DVD so that no one would see me at the theatre. I would read textbooks and nonfiction books about physics, genetics, neuroscience, and other scientific topics. I was great at hiding this fact from the public and only those closest to me knew of my obsession with all things geek. But the past few years, geek has become cool.
Geek chic is the new thing. What is geek chic, you ask. Well, it is a love affair with all things uncool, but in a more polished well put together style.Think David Tennant (10th Doctor, Doctor Who), Tina Fey, and Stephen Colbert. Plus, more interest in cult classics, super heroes, new technology, and geek fictional characters (Spock, Harry Potter, or Abby Sciuto). But is this new love of the anti-cool truly love for the real geek? Or is it just a passing fad for the “cool” people to add some anti-cool to their look for a while?
I love being a geek and in this time of geek chic, I feel like I want to profess to the world my geekdom. I know in the end the fad will fade and being a geek will no longer be cool, but would it be that bad if people knew my secret geek life? The older I get the less I seem to care if people know about my geeky personal life. I already have the perfect geeky boyfriend and some great geek friendly friends. Maybe it’s time I came out of the geek-closet and then I can get that awesome binary doormat I want.
