Would You Listen…
There are many times in life when you just wish people would listen. When you know in your heart that you are right, but you just can’t get people to see it your way.Whether it be your S.O., or your kids, or your parents, or your boss, it is just so frustrating when you can’t talk some sense into people.
I often think to myself in these times; Would they listen to me if I were someone different?
If I were older?
If I were younger?
If I looked different?
If my skin were a different shade?
If I had a higher paying job, or the things a nicer paying job would afford me?
If I was married or had children?Maybe then people would listen to me.
Often times we pay more attention to WHO is saying something, rather than WHAT it is that they are saying. In some cases that is totally fair. I am not likely to take serious medical advice from a ten year old. I am more likely to take diet tips from Halle Berry than I am from Jill Scott (no disrespect to Jill).
There are other times however, when this is totally not right.
I see my cousin’s wife spoiling their child rotten, and I suggest that my cousin be more firm with the child.
- Talk to me when you have kids of your own.I see my friend maxing out her credit cards and suggest that she get rid of them before she becomes deep in debt.
- That’s easy for you to say, you hardly ever buy anything.I see a friend in an abusive relationship and I suggest to her that she should move on.
- You are not married. You wouldn’t understand. So do I need to go through the same trials and tribulations as you are to be able to tell you anything? The fact that I prefer a relatively uncomplicated existence makes my words null and void? FINE! WHATEVER!
I wish people would just listen sometimes.
